POLICE FITNESS CHALLENGE

OCTOBER 5,2019

The Police Fitness Challenge is a tactical and obstacle, 2-person TEAM event primarily for law enforcement personnel, but with an Open Challenge in the afternoon for anyone from the public sector wanting to tackle this fun and challenging course. The course is located on a 120-acre private farm in the Blue Ridge Mountains outside of Galax, Virginia. It’s three miles long, features 21 obstacles, and ends with the obstacle that makes this event both special and unique — a timed marksmanship component!

The Story of
DEPUTY CURTIS BARTLETT

Curtis Bartlett was a Veteran, a Law Enforcement Officer, and a Body Builder with a huge following around the world via social media. He died in the line of duty as a County Deputy, serving in the same community where he was born and raised. Curtis believed that every Law Enforcement Officer and First Responder should be “fit to serve.”

THE MISSION

Police Fitness was founded as a non-profit to help law enforcement agencies establish a culture of well-being.  Deputy Bartlett believed officers have a solemn responsibility to pursue fitness in order to serve citizens and fellow officers who may call upon them for help. According to a recent Presidential Commission on Policing, a large proportion of officer injuries and deaths are not the result of interaction with criminal offenders, but the outcome of poor physical health due to inadequate  nutrition, lack of exercise, sleep deprivation, and sometimes substance abuse. Police Fitness addresses these critical issues by bringing together law enforcement agencies and health care providers to create an agency-wide wellness policy and a comprehensive plan. Police Fitness will also create a robust, mobile friendly website with workout and nutritional content, stories of First Responders “living inspired,” and opportunities for law enforcement agencies to compete in “fit to serve competitions.”

Deputy Bartlett was once asked why he was so passionate about police fitness and his response encapsulates our mission.  “An officer would never go on patrol with a poorly maintained vehicle or a gun that does not fire properly.  I don’t even want to leave the station with a malfunctioning flashlight.  Sadly, many officers ignore their most valuable weapons – a fit body, a clear mind, emotional stability, and divine purpose.”
